The U.S. Embassy in Colombo has announced a significant 10% rise in the number of Sri Lankan students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities during the 2023-2024 academic year,
according to the Open Doors Report. This increase, detailed in the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, underscores the growing appeal of U.S. higher education to Sri Lankan students and the resulting strong educational ties between the two countries.
The report, now in its 75th year, revealed a record 1.12 million international students from over 210 countries studying in the United States, solidifying the U.S.’s position as the world’s leading destination for higher education. U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung welcomed the trend, emphasizing the transformative impact of international education. “U.S. universities offer Sri Lankan students access to world-class education, cutting-edge research, and lifelong networks,” she said.
The Open Doors Report coincides with International Education Week, which celebrates global academic and cultural exchanges. The report highlights the appeal of U.S. STEM programs and the growing popularity of Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs, which provide students with hands-on learning opportunities. EducationUSA, a global advising network in its 25th year, continues supporting Sri Lankan students through resources and guidance.
Students are encouraged to visit the U.S. Embassy’s EducationUSA advising centre in Colombo for more information on studying in the USA.
