• New Government says Gotabaya not root cause for economic crisis

The Government says former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is not the root cause for the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

State Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe told Parliament that several people claim that the economic crisis began during the term of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.However, he said those claim are false and misleading.

The State Minister said that the economic crisis was as a result of poor economic policies taken since 1977.He said that Sri Lanka was already bankrupt by the year 2019 when Gotabaya Rajapaksa was elected as President.

Thousands took to the streets in 2022 and protested against Gotabaya Rajapaksa and forced him out of office.Rajapaksa was accused of being the main cause of the economic crisis which led to a shortage of fuel and gas in Sri Lanka.
