Justice Kodagoda pushes for ‘Chief Integrity Officers’ to tackle corporate corruption

Supreme Court Justice Yasantha Kodagoda, President’s Council (PC), has called on Sri Lanka’s corporates to appoint a ‘Chief Integrity Officer’ within their organisations to foster a culture of integrity and zero tolerance for bribery and corruption.

Pointing out that corruption has become an integral part of Sri Lanka’s official business and social culture, he asserted that the private sector has a key role to play in building a business environment free from corruption.

“It is important for you to realise that there is a role for each and every one of you,” he said.Kodagoda made these comments while addressing the AGM of the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) last week.

For large companies, he asserted that significantly more efforts are required to break away from the prevailing culture of corruption.

He urged corporates to refrain from resorting to bribery to secure government contracts for the supply of goods and services.
