Sri Lanka foreign exchange earnings rise to US$26bn in 2024

Sri Lanka has earned 26.23 billion US dollars through exports of goods and services, including tourism and labour in 2024, up 12.6 percent from 23.29 billion a year earlier, data from the central bank shows.

Imports were 18.8 billion US dollars in 2024, up 12.1 percent a year ago.As a result, after imports, 7.3 billion US dollars were left in 2024 to spend on services, to pay dividends and interest or repay debt and build reserves.

The current inflows were made up of 12.7 billion US dollars of merchandise exports and 6.88 billion dollars through exports of services including tourism.

Households also got 6.5 billion US dollars through official channels to spend on imports through family members in foreign countries which is an export of labour.
