Government to set up 1358MW of ground solar power plants

Sri Lanka is working on 1,358 MegaWatts of solar power plants, as part of efforts to reach 70 percent, renewable energy by 2030, Power Minister Kumara Jayakody said.

Some of the plants are awarded and is expected to come on stream by end 2026, Minister Jayakody told parliament.A 100 MW solar plant already awarded (to Winforce consortium) is expected to come on stream in 2026.

A 150MW and `100MW plants are proposed for Hambantota.In Sampur in Trincomallee, the first 50 MW phase is expected to begin construction in April for completion in 2026. The project is part of a 120MW joint venture between NTPS or India and CEB.

In Valachchenai two 100 MW plants, a 60 MW in Embilipitya and 70 MW in Puttalam is planned.Further land is being identified in Puttalam, Minister Jayakody said.In Moneragala a 108MW group plant and 100MW in Kappalthure is planned.The total comes to 1,358 MW.
