Sri Lanka’s Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has reached a milestone of 10 million registered tax files, with 9 million opened without individual requests.
Deputy Commissioner General B.K.S. Shantha stated that the department identified individuals through available data and created tax files accordingly. Many citizens may be unaware of their Tax Identification Numbers (TINs).
This move follows a 2023 mandate requiring all individuals over 18 to have tax files, introduced after low tax revenues triggered an economic crisis. The government has now set a revenue target of 2.19 trillion rupees for the IRD in 2025.
Shantha emphasized that the bulk opening of tax files was a strategic decision to streamline compliance and boost revenue collection.
