Sri Lanka plans to hire a marketing consultant before launching a call for expressions of interest from companies keen to explore natural gas in four blocks of the Mannar Basin, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced.
A licensing round will soon be opened to attract investment proposals for petroleum and natural gas exploration and production in these designated areas. The cabinet has approved the recruitment of a marketing expert to design and implement an effective promotional strategy.
Jayatissa also recalled that in 2011, Cairn Sri Lanka (Pvt) Ltd—a subsidiary of Cairn India—conducted exploration and drilling activities in the M2 block of the Mannar Basin.
These efforts led to the discovery of two natural gas deposits and confirmed the presence of a viable hydrocarbon system, reinforcing the area’s potential for energy development. The government aims to capitalize on these findings to attract international investors and develop the country’s energy sector
