A seabed clean-up operation was launched on June 2 in the Pigeon Island Marine National Park off Trincomalee to mark World Environment Day. Led by the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat, the initiative aims to safeguard marine ecosystems by removing harmful debris and the invasive Crown-of-Thorns starfish, a major threat to coral reefs.
The effort, supported by MEPA, the Navy, IUCN, local authorities, and volunteers, highlights Sri Lanka’s commitment to ocean conservation. Divers and marine experts carried out the operation using eco-friendly methods.
Pigeon Island, one of the country’s most biodiverse marine parks, faces increasing environmental threats from illegal fishing, unregulated tourism, and climate change. The clean-up marks a vital first step in preserving this fragile ecosystem.
Launched in January 2025, the Clean Sri Lanka initiative aims to build a greener, more sustainable nation through better waste management, biodiversity protection, and renewable energy use.
