Sri Lanka’s government plans to transform the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) into an international military academy, ceasing the admission of local non-cadet, fee-paying students for its medical program.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya confirmed the move in Parliament, stating it aligns with KDU’s original mission and the vision of its founder, Sir John Kotelawala. She emphasized the need to balance foreign exchange generation with equitable education access, adding that financial status should not limit higher education opportunities.
The decision affects 109 students who had already paid for medical studies at KDU. MP Ravi Karunanayaka criticized the policy, highlighting its unfairness—allowing overseas Sri Lankans to enroll while barring locals.
He warned it could drive students to study abroad, leading to capital outflow. The affected students have appealed to the president and initiated legal action. Amarasuriya, a seasoned academic, acknowledged her own education came through fee-levying institutions locally and internationally.
