The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) today cautioned the public about a noticeable increase in respiratory illnesses within the community and urged people to wear facemasks, particularly when attending large gatherings or interacting with many individuals.
GMOA Spokesman Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe, addressing a media briefing, advised the public to adhere to basic COVID-19 health guidelines, including regular handwashing and maintaining good respiratory hygiene.
Dr. Wijesinghe noted that a rise in COVID-19 cases has recently been reported in neighboring India, prompting health authorities there to step up PCR testing measures. While he reassured that there is currently no significant risk of a major outbreak locally, he emphasised the importance of remaining vigilant.
“The public should stay informed and cautious. At present, there’s no alarming situation, but preventive measures are always advisable,” he said.
Special attention is being advised for vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, elderly individuals, and those with chronic health conditions, as they remain at higher risk of complications from respiratory infections.
The GMOA reiterated its commitment to closely monitoring the situation and providing timely updates to safeguard public health.
