
Senior citizen FD interest rate increases by 3 percent

Sri Lanka will implement a special fixed deposit scheme for senior citizens which offers a 3 percent higher interest rate, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
“The implementation of this scheme is for fixed deposits opened by Sri Lankan citizens aged 60 years or above during the period from 2025-07-01 to 2025-12-31,” Jayatissa told reporters announcing the week’s cabinet decisions.
A higher interest rate will be paid of either the Average Weighted Fixed Deposit Interest Rate (AWFDR) plus 3 percent a year, or the fixed deposit interest rate published by the relevant bank plus 3 percent.
The fixed deposit has to be for a term of 12 months.The maximum deposit value is one million rupees.The government had allocated 30 billion rupees for the payment of interest subsidies for the entire program
