Sri Lanka exports rise 1.7-pct in May 2025, amid coconut trade surge

Sri Lanka’s merchandise exports rose 1.7 percent 1,028.52 million dollars in May 2025 from a year ago helped by tea and coconut exports, but apparel was slightly down and rubber exports fell 9.3 percent, data from the export promotion office showed.

Exports to the US was down 2.67 percent to 216.67 million dollars from a year ago, amid Trump tariffs and exports to the UK was also down 5.77 percent to 68.7 million US dollar.

Apparel exports fell by a marginal 0.38 percent to 388.81 million dollars and rubber-based exports fell 9.33 percent to 131 million dollars. Apparel and rubber are among top exports to the US.

Coconut based exports surged 33 percent to 92.9 million US dollars, and tea also rose 14.5 percent to 131 million US dollars picking up the slack.In the first five months 0f 2025 exports were up 5.46 percent to 5,344.27 million dollars
