Accidents Emerge as Top Cause of Hospitalization in Sri Lanka

Accidents have become a major public health crisis in Sri Lanka, causing around 12,000 deaths annually, with 3,000 occurring after hospitalization, according to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media.

Each year, approximately one million people seek treatment following incidents such as road crashes, falls, animal bites, and assaults, while an estimated 3 million medical visits are related to accidental injuries.

The ministry noted that most victims are between 15 and 44 years of age, making accidents a significant contributor to disability and loss of productivity. The statement, issued to mark National Accident Prevention Week from July 7 to 11, emphasized that many of these injuries could be avoided through increased public awareness and safety measures.

Officials warn that without proactive intervention, accident-related harm may escalate in the future due to urbanization, mechanization, and expanding infrastructure. The long-term effects of such incidents extend beyond individuals, impacting families and society at large.
