Sri Lanka plans to call proposals to develop and manage 44 ‘rest houses’ or small hotels owned by the government which date back to the British colonial period, cabinet spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa said.
Some of the rest houses were under the Urban Development Authority, others were with regional authorities. As a first step the cabinet has approved the transfer of the resthouses to the UDA.
“Although these inns are located in scenic tourist spots, they have fallen into a dilapidated state due to poor management,” Jayatissa told reporters.
“Developing these resthouses will enable the public to be provided quality services at a good price, and create a means of generating income.”
The cabinet approved the proposal to take over 44 such premises under the country’s Lands Ordinance so that they can be developed through a call for project proposals
