
Sugar factory shock:170kg stone found in sugarcane stock

The Deputy Minister of Trade, Commerce, and Food Security, R.M. Jayawardena, who is also the Chairman of the Monaragala District Coordination Committee, visited the Sevanagala Sugar Factory today August 1, 2025, to discuss the unfolding issues. His visit comes after a stone weighing approximately 170 kg was discovered hidden among sugarcane stock at the factory on July 30, 2025.
Deputy Minister has declared that that the current government will not permit the sugar industry to collapse due to “sabotage”. This declaration follows a recent incident at the Sevanagala Sugar Factory and ongoing accusations from various parties.
During his discussions, Minister Jayawardena emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting honest workers and farmers. He also affirmed that the government would continue its efforts to maintain stable sugar prices, which he highlighted as a primary process within the industry.
Police officials were also involved, conducting initial investigations into the complaint filed by Sevanagala Factory authorities regarding the stone found in the sugarcane stock on the same day as the Minister’s visit, August 1, 2025.
The Deputy Minister’s strong stance underscores the government’s determination to counter disruptive activities and safeguard the stability of Sri Lanka’s vital sugar industry.
