Bribery Commission warns of legal action over assets declarations

Legal action will be taken against any Executive Grade State official who fails to submit their assets and liabilities declarations by August 31, 2025, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) said.

The CIABOC said that while the original deadline to submit asset and liability declarations for the 2025 assessment year was March 31, 2025, officials were given an extended grace period until June 30, 2025, to submit their documents to the heads of their respective institutions.

However, the Commission now warns that any individual who fails to submit the required declarations by August 31, 2025, will be subject to legal proceedings under Section 90 of the Anti-Corruption Act, No. 9 of 2023.

This section empowers the Commission to initiate cases against non-compliant officers.

Further, CIABOC noted that late submissions made between June 30 and August 31 will incur administrative fines in accordance with the provisions of the Act. Officials are urged to minimize penalties by submitting the required declarations as soon as possible.

The Commission also emphasized that heads of institutions are obligated to accept late submissions made before the final deadline. If any head of an institution refuses to accept a declaration submitted within this period, they are required to inform the Assets and Liabilities Division of the Commission.

Earlier this year, CIABOC issued a directive requiring all individuals mandated under the Anti-Corruption Act to submit their declarations by May 31, 2025, with heads of institutions instructed to provide a list of compliant and non-compliant individuals by July 1, 2025.

The declarations must include a comprehensive account of personal assets and liabilities as of the specified date, and the process aims to enhance transparency and accountability within public service.
