Japan gives Rs. 131M for demining in North

Japan has once again shown its support for Sri Lanka by providing a new grant of about USD 450,000 (around Rs. 131.4 million) to help clear landmines in the Northern Province.

This grant is part of Japan’s “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP)” and was signed by the Japanese Ambassador, Akio Isomata, and Mr. Ananda Chandrasiri from Delvon Assistance for Social Harmony (DASH).

This funding will help DASH continue its work for another nine months, from August 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026. Japan has been supporting DASH for 16 years, and the total amount given so far is more than Rs. 1,561 million.

Ambassador Isomata said this aid fits with Japan’s goal of promoting “Human Security” by helping people and building stronger communities. The new project aims to clear over 100,000 square meters of land, helping more than 5,000 people. About 900 people will be able to resettle safely, and around 4,000 others can start farming and other jobs.

Since 2010, DASH has cleared 7.9 square kilometers of land with Japan’s help, destroying over 56,000 anti-personnel mines, 114 anti-tank mines, and thousands of other dangerous items. This work has directly helped 27,005 people and indirectly helped nearly 100,000 more.

Japan has been supporting Sri Lanka’s de-mining efforts since 2002, with total aid reaching around USD 48 million. This ongoing support shows Japan’s strong commitment to Sri Lanka’s recovery, safety, and future development.
