Priyantha Weerasooriya appointed 37th IGP

Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya has been appointed as the 37th Inspector General of Police of Sri Lanka.

The appointment follows a meeting between the Constitutional Council and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on August 12. The President had previously recommended Weerasooriya for the post.

This appointment comes after the removal of former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon earlier this month.

The Constitutional Council, chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, convened to ratify the President’s recommendation.

Notably, Weerasooriya is the first officer in the 158-year history of the Sri Lanka Police to rise from the rank of Police Constable to IGP.

Weerasooriya, born in Dodangoda in 1969, began his career in the Sri Lanka Police as a constable in 1988. Over the past 36 years, he has risen through the ranks, serving in various capacities including Deputy Inspector General of Police for Crime and Traffic, Director of Police Logistics, and Senior Deputy Inspector General in charge of the North Central Province.

He has also participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions in East Timor and Haiti.

He holds a law degree from the University of Colombo and a Master’s in Law from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.
