Sri Lanka is set to be positioned as an AI hub in the Asia-Pacific region and to accelerate the systemic introduction of artificial intelligence across all economic sectors, as revealed at a media awareness session on Sri Lanka’s first national artificial intelligence exhibition and conference, “AI Expo 2025”, held yesterday (August 14) at the ICTA auditorium (Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka).
The exhibition AI Expo 2025 is scheduled for 29 and 30 September 2025, and the government’s vision is to expand the digital economy—valued at US $3.5 billion in 2025—to US $15 billion by 2030, with AI expected to contribute 10%–12% of that growth.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eng. Eranga Weeraratne, described AI Expo 2025 as “a milestone that will lay the foundation for the future of artificial intelligence in Sri Lanka.” He noted that AI will play a vital role in driving innovation, boosting economic growth, and enhancing quality across industries.
Following the conference and exhibition, AI knowledge, applications, and hands-on experiences will be taken to regional hubs, including Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Kandy, and Matara, ensuring that communities across the island can take part in the AI transformation launched by AI Expo 2025.
The event is organised under the leadership of the Ministry of Digital Economy, in collaboration with the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka, SLT Mobitel, SLASSCOM Sri Lanka, and Huawei.
The awareness session was attended by Mr. Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Acting Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy; Dr. Hans Wijesuriya, Chief Advisor to the President on Digital Economy; Dr. Motilal de Silva, Chairman of SLT Mobitel; and Mr. Janaka Abeysinghe, CEO of Mobitel.
