Colombo to Redevelop Aging Government Flats Next Year

The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) has announced plans to redevelop government apartment complexes in Colombo District that are over 40 years old, a move expected to begin next year. This was disclosed during a recent Sectoral Oversight Committee on Infrastructure and Strategic Development meeting in Parliament, chaired by MP S.M. Marikkar.

Officials told the committee that 45 housing projects in Colombo, comprising around 10,000 units, are due for redevelopment. The committee chairman directed NHDA to submit a detailed report within a month outlining how these projects will be implemented, including arrangements for current residents.

Technical and valuation assessments of the existing buildings will be conducted, and the redevelopment is expected to follow a public-private partnership model. The chairman also requested a comprehensive report with all relevant information to guide the committee’s oversight.

In addition, officials highlighted that nearly 45,000 housing units started between 2015 and 2019 were abandoned for various reasons. A new plan aims to complete these constructions within three years.
