Vietnam Awards Five Full Scholarships to Sri Lankan Students

Vietnam’s Cuu Long University has awarded five full scholarships to Sri Lankan students, allowing them to pursue higher education in the Southeast Asian nation over the next five years. The first four students met with Vietnam’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Trinh Thi Tam, before departing on August 18 to begin their studies, according to Nguoi Lao Dong News.

The scholarship program begins with a one-year Vietnamese language course, after which students will enroll in a four-year undergraduate program, with an option to continue into a two-year graduate course. Cuu Long University will cover tuition, dormitory accommodation with Wi-Fi and electricity, a monthly living allowance of approximately 3.6 million dong (around USD 140), and provide a roundtrip air ticket.

Students will study majors aligned with Sri Lanka’s development priorities, including High-Tech Agriculture, Business Administration, Information Technology, Public Health, and Linguistics. Ambassador Tam highlighted that the initiative reflects practical cooperation between the two countries’ education ministries and promotes people-to-people exchanges, fostering closer ties ahead of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.

The program aims not only to provide academic knowledge but also to offer students firsthand experience of Vietnam’s culture, society, and everyday life. Established in 2000 in Vinh Long Province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, Cuu Long University currently educates about 12,000 full-time students and has trained over 40,000 undergraduates since its founding. The scholarships are seen as a significant step in strengthening educational collaboration and cultural understanding between Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
