BIA: flights up 16%, profits up 78%

Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has reported a substantial 16% increase in flight movements during the first six months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

This growth is accompanied by an impressive 78% surge in operational profit for the Sri Lanka Airport and Aviation Company over the same period.

According to the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, international flight movements saw a 17% growth, while domestic flight movements increased by 10%. The peak growth for international flights was recorded in March 2025, showing a 22% increase compared to March 2024. Domestic flight movements experienced their highest growth in June, with a remarkable 38% increase relative to June 2024.

Financially, the Sri Lanka Airport and Aviation Company’s operational profit reached LKR 16,133 million in the first six months of 2025, a significant rise from the LKR 9,049 million recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The Airport Authority anticipates further expansion of flight movements with the upcoming tourist season. The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation released these figures, indicating a positive trajectory for air travel and aviation services in Sri Lanka.
