Trump sets two weeks deadline for Putin

U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin has two weeks to agree to peace talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, warning that he will decide on the next course of action if Moscow continues to stall.

Speaking in an interview with CNN, Trump said he would “know in two weeks what I’m going to do” after Russia appeared to dismiss his latest push for a direct meeting between the two wartime leaders.

Earlier this week, Trump suggested that Putin and Zelensky should first arrange their own summit, which could then be followed by a trilateral meeting including the United States. However, Zelensky accused Moscow of deliberately obstructing any negotiations, saying Russia was “doing anything” to avoid face-to-face talks.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov added to the skepticism, telling reporters that a potential agenda for a Putin–Zelensky meeting was “not ready at all,” further clouding prospects for direct engagement.

Despite the obstacles, Trump has kept pressure on Moscow, repeating his two-week deadline several times throughout the interview. He previously gave Putin the same timeframe to avoid new U.S. sanctions.

“We’ll see what happens,” Trump told an international news site. “I think in two weeks, we’ll know which way I’m going, because I’m going to go one way or the other, and they’ll learn which way.”
