Sixty one Sri Lankan journalists were awarded “Asi Disi” media scholarships yesterday at the Ministry of Mass Media in Narahenpita.
The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, who also announced plans to introduce a formal insurance scheme for journalists next year.
The scholarships, which have benefited a total of 1,133 journalists since the program began in 2006, aim to enhance professional skills through training courses. Eligible journalists include full-time, part-time, freelance, regional, and web journalists, as well as media technicians, provided they have at least three years of service at recognized media institutions.
Recipients pursuing degree or postgraduate programs receive two hundred thousand rupees, while those enrolled in certificate or advanced diploma courses receive one hundred thousand rupees. This year, the government allocated seven million rupees for the program.
Minister Jayatissa emphasized that selections were made purely on merit by a committee led by the Ministry Secretary.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to media excellence, Minister Jayatissa spoke of initiatives to formulate a new media policy, develop a code of ethics, and establish a chartered institution for journalists.
He underscored the vital role of media as one of society’s four pillars, alongside the judiciary, legislature, and executive, and stressed the importance of responsible reporting, critical questioning, and public guidance.
The Minister further revealed ongoing discussions with foreign diplomatic officials to enable Sri Lankan journalists to participate in international training programs and experience-sharing initiatives.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Secretary to the Ministry Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Additional Secretaries Deepa Liyanage and N.A.K.L. Wijenaika, Director General of Government Information Harsha Bandara, and Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Chairman Professor Uditha Gayashan, alongside other dignitaries and journalists.
