Opposition condemns Wickremesinghe arrest

Sri Lanka’s opposition parties accused the government of undermining democracy by arresting former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, calling it an act of “political revenge.”

At a joint press conference themed “Let’s Defeat the Constitutional Dictatorship,” leaders including former President Maithripala Sirisena, former Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, MPs Namal Rajapaksa, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Champika Ranawaka, Rauf Hakeem, and several others condemned the arrests of opposition figures.

The joint opposition statement alleged that state institutions, including the police and anti-corruption commission, were being politicized to suppress dissent. It described Wickremesinghe’s remand over alleged misuse of state funds as a “politically motivated” case based on a flawed internal audit report, and warned it could erode public trust in judicial processes.

The opposition further charged that appointing politically biased investigators and pursuing incomplete cases amounted to “an attack on multi-party democracy and freedom of political expression.”

Wickremesinghe, 76, remains in intensive care after falling ill while in remand custody.
