Ranil Wickremesinghe granted bail

Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura today (26) granted bail to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was arrested over allegations of misusing Rs. 16.6 million in state funds for a private overseas tour.

He was released on three sureties of Rs. 5 million each, with the case fixed for further hearing on October 29, 2025.

Wickremesinghe, currently receiving treatment in the ICU of the Colombo National Hospital, appeared before court via Zoom. His lawyers, led by President’s Counsels Thilak Marapana, Anuja Premaratne, Upul Jayasuriya and Ali Sabry, argued that no misappropriation had been proven, citing audit findings.

The Attorney General’s Department opposed bail, questioning the legality of the overseas visit, while Wickremesinghe’s counsel highlighted his critical health condition, including three blocked coronary arteries.

Heavy police security was deployed around the court premises as opposition supporters, joined by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, staged protests demanding the government step down.
