Solar boats clean Beira Lake

Sri Lanka has initiated a environmental project to restore Beira Lake in Colombo by deploying solar-powered electric boats designed to collect floating solid waste.

This initiative, launched by the Western Province Governor’s Media Unit, aims to remove up to 3,000 kilograms of waste daily from the lake.

The program began as a pilot project and is set to expand with the deployment of four solar-powered electric boats. Each boat is equipped to collect significant amounts of waste, contributing to the overall goal of enhancing the lake’s water quality, restoring its ecosystem, and improving the area’s aesthetic appeal.

The project is a collaborative effort involving the Western Province’s Task Force on Restoring Beira Lake and Clean Ocean Force. Governor Hanif Yusoof expressed gratitude for Clean Ocean Force’s innovative solutions in environmental preservation, highlighting the importance of such partnerships in addressing pollution challenges.

This initiative is part of Sri Lanka’s broader “Clean Sri Lanka” program, which includes various measures to combat pollution and promote sustainable urban development. Previous efforts have involved the deployment of ecological floating islands to purify the lake and clean-up drives led by the Tri-Forces and the Civil Security Department.

The success of this pilot project is expected to pave the way for similar initiatives in other urban water bodies across the country, aiming to enhance environmental quality and public health.
