India’s Adani Green Energy has requested reimbursement from the Sri Lankan government following its withdrawal from two wind power projects in Mannar and Pooneryn, initially valued at $442 million.
The projects, expected to generate 350 MW by 2025, were scrapped after the new National People’s Power (NPP) administration contested the high power costs agreed upon by the previous government.
Adani’s decision to exit the ventures was communicated earlier this year, with the company seeking compensation for preliminary expenses, including research conducted with Sri Lanka’s Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA). While the total reimbursement is yet to be finalized, it may include a $3 million payment already made to the SEA.
The Ministry of Power and Energy has not made a final decision, with officials indicating that legal consultation will precede any action. Any payment, if approved, would require Cabinet approval.
