Cabinet approves amendment to child protection Act

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has given its approval for a proposal to amend the Child Protection Authority Act No. 50 of 1998.

This move comes as the current act, which was enacted approximately 25 years ago, is no longer considered sufficient to address the increasing complexities of child exploitation and harassment.

These complexities are attributed to significant socio-economic, political, and cultural changes over the past quarter-century..

There is a recognized need to update the existing laws to ensure effective prevention of and response to all forms of child abuse.
