Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith warns that an organized program, backed by international organizations, aims to promote homosexuality in Sri Lanka. He further stated that it threatens the country’s marriage culture.
The Cardinal made these remarks while attending a ceremony at Ruhunu University, where the Aggamaha Panditha honorary title was conferred by the Myanmar government on Ruhunu University’s Vice-Chancellor, Dhamma Keerthi Sri Dr. Akuratiye Nanda Nayaka Thero.
According to him, these programs are being conducted with the assistance of foreign organizations and also involve prominent professions. He indicated that he has received information suggesting that some political parties and leaders are blessing this agenda.
He stated that a campaign is currently underway to recruit young Sri Lankan men and women into these organizations.
A key concern highlighted by the Cardinal is that this matter involves a group of mental health doctors who are reportedly facilitating changes in sexual identity. He explained that if a child wishes to change their sexual identity, these mental health doctors can provide a certificate enabling individuals born male, for instance, to declare themselves female and obtain a birth certificate to that effect. This certified document, approved by the Ministry of Health, would then allow them to marry someone of the same sex as their declared gender.
The Cardinal said people who raise concerns are often criticized for not respecting human rights. He rejects any changes to the law that support fraudulently changing human identity, calling it a program that could darken the country’s future.
He cautioned that if this situation persists, Sri Lanka’s marriage culture could completely collapse.
Cardinal Ranjith asserted that this secret program is designed to destabilize the institution of marriage in Sri Lanka and warned that it could become a major problem for the future of the country and for the Buddhist dispensation, which is highly respected in the nation.
Despite his strong opposition to the perceived promotional activities, Cardinal Ranjith also stated that it is not appropriate to harass children who may be experiencing transgender needs or situations, emphasizing that it is our duty to treat every such child with respect.
