China’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, emphasized the importance of Sri Lanka maintaining an independent foreign policy amidst external pressures, particularly as some parties exploit the island’s economic challenges.
Speaking to journalists in Colombo, Qi stated that claims suggesting Sri Lanka needs help from other countries to recover economically were misleading. He urged Sri Lankans to trust in their own abilities and strengthen ties with supportive partners like China.
Qi reaffirmed that China’s assistance aims to help Sri Lanka become independent and resilient against foreign influence. He also highlighted the past strain in relations when the previous government rejected
China’s request for a scientific research vessel, calling it a disappointing decision despite the historically strong ties between the two nations. Despite this, Qi expressed confidence in Sri Lanka’s future following the new government’s election.
