The Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC has become the first Sri Lankan bank to achieve a market capitalisation of over USD 1 billion, marking a historic milestone at the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE). The occasion was celebrated with the ceremonial ringing of the bell, attended by the bank’s Chairman Sharhan Muhseen, Managing Director/CEO Sanath Manatunge, board members, and senior management.
The milestone was reached on 19 August 2025, when the bank’s share price climbed to Rs.196.75, compared to Rs.144.75 at end-December 2024. Commercial Bank now becomes the third company listed on the CSE to join the billion-dollar league.
Chairman Muhseen said the achievement strengthens the bank’s visibility in global markets and boosts its potential inclusion in institutional portfolios and index funds. He added that the enhanced market capitalisation improves access to capital and credit, allowing greater investments in innovation and growth.
CSE Chairman Dimuthu Abeyesekera described the milestone as a proud moment for the bank and the country, noting that every billion-dollar company adds credibility and appeal to Sri Lanka’s equity market.
In the first half of 2025, Commercial Bank also became the first private sector bank in Sri Lanka to surpass Rs.3 trillion in assets. It continues to hold the title of the most valuable private sector bank brand and operates the widest international footprint among local banks
