Committee recommends removal of Deshabandu

Parliament was informed today July 22, that the special committee appointed to investigate suspended IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon has recommended his removal from office.

Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne stated that the committee’s report, submitted to Parliament, had unanimously found Tennakoon guilty of serious misconduct and abuse of power.

This recommendation follows a series of serious allegations, including Tennakoon’s alleged involvement in a police shooting near the W15 Hotel in Weligama, which resulted in the death of a police officer.

The Matara Magistrate’s Court issued an arrest warrant for Tennakoon in February 2025.

The special inquiry committee, appointed in April, was chaired by Supreme Court Justice Preethi Pathman Surasena, and included Justice Neil Iddawela and National Police Commission Chairman Lalith Ekanayake.

The committee met over 10 times and began daily evidence sessions on July 16, which have now been completed.
