Following the recent hike in wholesale cement prices, the National Construction Employees’ Society (NCES) blamed the Government for its lack of intervention to control the prices and its failure to provide the support promised during the election period to the construction industry.
Speaking at a press conference held yesterday (9), the NCES Secretary Supun Abeysekara said that the recent price increase will significantly affect the construction industry, claiming that such a hike would discourage people from engaging in construction activities. He also stated that the recovery of the construction industry after the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic crisis would be reversed by such decisions.
He further noted that a clear rise in demand for construction work is usually seen during the season starting from May. Therefore, the decision to increase prices would hinder the development of the industry. He criticised the Government for its failure to address these issues.
“This Government made many promises during the elections. We had hope for them. Yet, they have now failed to fulfil what they promised. The construction industry has been ignored by this Government,” he added
