The Committee on Public Finance (CoPF) has raised concerns about significant tax revenue losses due to inconsistencies in levying taxes on imported used vehicles, especially low-mileage units. Chair MP Dr. Harsha de Silva questioned Sri Lanka Customs on whether VAT collection was being carried out fairly and efficiently.
Officials admitted to tax variations based on registration and vehicle usage. The Chair emphasized the government’s reliance on import taxes and called for a detailed report on taxes collected from a sample of used vehicle imports.
Separately, the CoPF approved revisions to advance account limits for several ministries and departments for 2024 under the Appropriation Act No. 34 of 2023.
These include funds for activities such as bribery detection, educational publications, prison industries, and railway stores. The Committee reaffirmed its support for anti-corruption efforts, particularly the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption
