An investigation has been launched into a large cache of wartime valuables discovered by the Sri Lanka Army in former LTTE-controlled areas.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali directed the Military Intelligence Directorate to hand over the items—recovered from LTTE camps and illegal financial sites—for assessment by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority.
The order follows a request from Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath, representing the CID, seeking custody of the gold and treasures stored at military intelligence facilities. The court was informed that approximately 300 items would initially be analyzed in phases to determine their value, weight, and composition.
Upon completion of the analysis, the CID requested that the valuables be securely stored with the Central Bank. The court granted all requests, allowing the investigation and assessment process to proceed.
