Cyberattacks Surge in Sri Lanka with Public Security Ministry Targeted

In 2025, Sri Lanka witnessed a troubling rise in cyberattacks, with high-profile breaches impacting both government and private sectors.

The Ministry of Public Security fell victim to a cyberattack that embarrassed the institution, though no sensitive data was compromised. Google search results for the ministry’s “Secretary” page displayed pornographic expletives, caused by outdated SEO software and likely internal access exploitation.

Some times back recently Cargills Bank suffered a major ransomware attack that disrupted operations and raised concerns about the cybersecurity readiness of financial institutions.

Additionally, other public sector websites experienced brief service outages due to suspected coordinated attacks.Experts warn that poor software maintenance, weak internal controls, and delayed security updates are contributing to the country’s growing vulnerability.

In response, authorities are calling for immediate upgrades to digital infrastructure, improved monitoring systems, and stronger cybersecurity protocols across all sectors to combat this escalating threat.
