The Department of Registration of Persons has announced that the issuance of electronic national identity cards will begin in the first few weeks of December.
The department said that the new cards used for the E-NICs have already been received. A batch of approximately 2.3 million cards has been ordered from a Finnish company.
The Department of Registration of Persons added that the new electronic NICs will include biometrics, as part of the new system.
India has already granted an advance aid of 450 million Indian rupees to the government to fund the digital ID project, which will collect biographic and biometric information, including facial, iris, and fingerprint data.
The Electronic National Identity Card (eNIC) has been in development since 2012. But only on Oct. 2017, the Department for the Registrations of Persons (DRP) launched eNICs as a pilot project by issuing them for those who are renewing or obtaining their NIC for the first time.
