Ex-IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon granted bail

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and subsequently remanded, has been granted bail.

The order was issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura, Ada Derana reporter said.

The Magistrate ordered Deshabandu Tennakoon be released on two surety bails of Rs. 1 million each while a travel ban was also imposed on the suspect.

Meanwhile, former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon has been instructed to refrain from influencing the witnesses.

Furthermore, the Magistrate ordered that the suspect must assist the CID and court during the investigation process when summoned.

Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura stated that the failure to appear when summoned would result in the cancellation of the bail and the suspect being remanded.

Subsequently, the case was scheduled to be taken up again on September 3.

The former IGP was arrested by the CID at his residence on August 20, in connection with investigations into the attack carried out on the “Aragalaya” protest movement on May 9, 2022, at Galle Face Green in Colombo.
