Forty AI cameras to be installed in SLTB, private buses to reduce accidents

Transport Ministry is set to install forty AI camera systems in Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and private long-distance buses as part of a new initiative aimed at reducing road accidents.

This pilot project, launched with private sector involvement, focuses on enhancing safety by closely monitoring driver behavior.

The advanced AI cameras are designed to detect signs of driver fatigue, sleepiness, eye closure, and ensure compliance with traffic regulations, including the use of seat belts. The system also alerts drivers in real-time to encourage safer driving practices and assists bus management in overseeing operations.

The first phase of the project was inaugurated today at the Kataragama depot, with Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Ratnayake presiding over the ceremony. Several long-distance buses were equipped with the AI camera systems during the launch, and the Minister conducted an inspection tour of the depot.
