The government has approved the establishment of a National Cyber Protection Operations Center under the guidance of the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) and the Ministry of Digital Economy, aimed at minimizing growing cyber threats and risks.
Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, addressing the media today, warned that cyberattacks targeting public institutions and financial establishments could disrupt essential services. He noted that such incidents could lead to the leakage of private and sensitive data, posing risks to personal security, national security, economic stability, public health, good governance, and public trust in state institutions.
The newly established center will operate around the clock, continuously monitoring, identifying, and responding to cyber threats. It will also provide facilities to detect and report malicious software and unauthorized access attempts.
Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved a proposal presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Minister of Digital Economy, directing secretaries and heads of relevant ministries to obtain the services of the National Cyber Protection Operations Center on a continuous basis.
