The Government is considering disciplinary action against an official accused of providing incorrect statistics to Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya regarding the controversial SupremeSAT satellite project, initiated in 2012 by SupremeSAT Ltd., a subsidiary of Supreme Global Holdings, linked to Rohitha Rajapaksa.
Sources said the official, reportedly appointed during former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s tenure, could face compulsory leave under the Establishments Code, pending investigation.
Addressing Parliament, Dr. Amarasuriya said the Board of Investment (BOI)-approved project aimed to operate a satellite communication system in the Kandy Industrial Zone, with an investment of Rs. 1.828 billion and no state funding. BOI data showed SupremeSAT earning between Rs. 19.6 billion and Rs. 87.7 billion annually from 2015 to 2022, with Rs. 39.6 billion in the first half of 2023.
However, Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe disputed these figures, alleging the BOI misled the Prime Minister. He claimed the company’s real income was Rs. 342 million, not from the satellite, and flagged asset declaration and investment discrepancies. Samarasinghe also questioned the satellite’s existence, calling for a full probe into the project’s finances and records.
