The Government’s plan to import 2,000 double cabs for State institutions is still at proposal stage and will only be considered under the 2026 Budget, Treasury Deputy Secretary Ananda Kithsiri Seneviratne confirmed.
“This is only a proposal for now and will not be implemented immediately,” he said, adding that Cabinet and Treasury approval had not yet been sought.
The plan, initially disclosed by Public Administration Minister Dr. Chandana Abayarathna, aims to address a severe shortage of vehicles in State institutions, particularly divisional secretariats, where many double cabs are 10–15 years old and in poor condition. Seneviratne acknowledged the urgent need for replacements, noting that most vehicles in use are outdated and inefficient.
However, the proposal appears to contrast with earlier Government measures to cut State expenditure, which included selling high-maintenance, fuel-intensive luxury vehicles.
Neither Minister Abayarathna nor Ministry Secretary S. Aloka Bandara was available for comment. If approved, the imports would mark a significant investment in upgrading Government transport resources, but their inclusion in the 2026 Budget means any procurement will be at least a year away.
