Insurance scheme for Sri Lanka kithul, coconut and palm tappers

Sri Lanka is to introduce an insurance scheme for kithul, coconut and palm tappers, Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board Chairman Pemasiri Jasingarachchi has said.

“Kithul, coconut and palm workers risk their lives when they climb the palm trees to do their jobs,” Jasingarachchi said in a statement.

Upon their request, the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board has decided to implement an insurance scheme in case of death and total disability in their line of work, he said.

The insurance covers are 500,000 rupees, 1,000,000 rupees and 2,000,000 rupees.This would be available in case of temporary disability and hospitalization, and permanent disability and death.

Farmers can benefit from the scheme by contributing an annual fee of 2,000 rupees, 4,000 rupees and 8,000 rupees.
