Japan grants Rs.687M for public sector scholarships
The Government of Japan has granted Japanese Yen 332 million (approximately Rs. 687 million) to Sri Lanka under the Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resources Development Scholarship (JDS) Programme for 2025.
An Exchange of Notes and a Grant Agreement were signed yesterday, 24 July 2025, at the Ministry of Finance by Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Treasury, Ambassador ISOMATA Akio of Japan, and Mr. YAMADA Tetsuya, Chief Representative of JICA.
This funding will support young executive-level Sri Lankan public officials to pursue postgraduate degrees in Japan.
Since its inception in 2010, the JDS Programme has offered 240 Master’s and 16 PhD scholarships, helping to build leadership capacity within Sri Lanka’s public sector. The programme is funded through Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) and implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
