
Japanese Defence Minister meets Prime Minister Harini to bolster bilateral ties

Japanese Defence Minister Gen. Nakatani paid a courtesy call on Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya at Temple Trees today, with discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in defense and regional security.
Minister Nakatani conveyed congratulations on behalf of the Japanese government and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. He also highlighted Sri Lanka’s strategic importance in maritime security and regional connectivity.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya thanked Japan for its ongoing support, particularly through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and reiterated her government’s commitment to transparency, economic reform, and national transformation.
She also outlined Sri Lanka’s vision for evolving the role of its security forces to include climate response, humanitarian aid, and maritime protection.
The two sides also explored potential collaborations in trade, investment, and tourism, agreeing to deepen engagement across five key sectors.
Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata and senior officials from both countries were present at the meeting.
