A Pakistani journalist was swept away by raging floodwaters while reporting live from Rawalpindi today, and the video of the harrowing moment has since gone viral, sparking widespread concern over media safety and the government’s emergency response.
In the meantime, at least 57 people, including 24 children, have died over the past two days as torrential monsoon rains swept through Pakistan’s Punjab province.
Flooding triggered by relentless rainfall since Wednesday has submerged both cities and rural areas, with most deaths caused by collapsing buildings.
Chakwal, south of Islamabad, was among the worst-hit areas, where entire villages were inundated and infrastructure badly damaged.
Since the monsoon season began in late June, over 180 people more than 80 of them children have died across Pakistan.
Experts have linked the increasing frequency of such extreme weather events to climate change.
