Long-Delayed Dairy Project in Gampaha to Resume

A long-stalled dairy-based production project in Badalgama, Gampaha, is set to be completed soon, according to Milco Chairman V.J.H. Gothabaya.

The project, launched in 2015, had reached nearly 95 percent completion by 2019 and was scheduled to begin production. However, work came to a halt, leaving the facility inactive for several years.

Built at a cost of Rs. 18 billion, the state-of-the-art plant was expected to significantly boost Sri Lanka’s dairy industry and reduce the country’s reliance on imports. Gothabaya said the current government has now prioritized the project, taking necessary steps to finalize construction and bring the factory into operation.

He added that once completed, the facility will play a crucial role in strengthening local milk production, generating rural employment, and supporting farmers in the region.

The government’s renewed focus on the project is seen as part of a broader effort to revitalize the dairy sector, which has faced challenges due to delays in infrastructure, import dependence, and underutilized local capacity.

Industry observers say the restart of this project could mark a turning point in achieving greater self-sufficiency in milk and dairy products in Sri Lanka
