New anti-dumping measures cleared to shield Sri Lankan producers

Sri Lanka’s parliamentary committees on trade and public finance have jointly approved new regulations aimed at protecting local industries from unfair trade practices and sudden imports, officials said on Wednesday.

The joint meeting, chaired by Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe and MP Dr. Harsha de Silva, gave the green light to measures under the Anti-dumping and Countervailing Duty Act, No. 2 of 2018, as published in the Extraordinary Gazette No. 2429/32 on 27 March 2025.

Officials clarified that these anti-dumping, countervailing duty, and safeguard provisions are intended “to provide protection to local producers in Sri Lanka against unfair trade practices and sudden imports.” The regulations aim to offer “relief regarding damages and threats caused by unfair trade activities and sudden imports,” they said as quoted in a statement.

The meeting also focused on the cooperative sector, with members highlighting the absence of a formal loan provision for cooperatives. There is no existing provision for providing loans to cooperatives, the Ministerial Consultative Committee noted
