Newly elected Small Hydro Power Developers Association (SHPDA) President Pathmanatha Poddiwala has pledged to guide the renewable energy industry through a period of major regulatory and structural change. Speaking after his election, Poddiwala said the association—contributing nearly 450 MW to the national grid must adapt to new challenges such as the Electricity Act, unbundling of the CEB, and project curtailments.
He called for innovation and efficiency, particularly through Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), to enhance power reliability and sustainability. Poddiwala’s agenda includes forming a strategic plan, expanding stakeholder engagement, and building ties with global renewable energy partners. He also announced a membership expansion drive and stronger media outreach to promote the sector’s role in Sri Lanka’s green transition.
Poddiwala expressed confidence that the new executive committee would “deliver measurable outcomes” and ensure renewable energy remains central to Sri Lanka’s future growth
